How To Avoid The Number 1 Mistake When Designing Virtual Training
What’s the biggest temptation when you’re designing:
- a digital lesson?
- an eLearning module?
- a webinar?
?
Trying to include too many ideas and too much content.
Thinking:
- It’s just a digital lesson, I can tell them everything or
- It’s a webinar, while I have everyone together, I’ll explain this and this and this ….
But of course, this:
- leads to learner confusion as there is so much mixed content, what’s do I really need to know/do?
- the training being too long
- loss of interest from the learner as the module becomes a ‘talking book/head’
- not enough engagement and practice time for learners
So, what’s the answer?
1 Digital Lesson = 1 Objective, or
1 eLearning Module = 1 Objective, or
1 Webinar = 1 Objective
This keeps:
- the design focused upon one task (objective task)
- the facilitator focused upon observing the learner doing one thing
- the learner clear about what they are learning
PLUS allowing for plenty of practice
Bonus Idea
If the virtual training you are creating needs more than 1 objective, rather than trying to do everything in the one virtual training, create a virtual series ie rather one webinar covering 3 objectives and not having the time to allow learners to practice applying their new content, divide it up as one training containing 3 episodes. In other words, have 3 webinars where each one has its own single objective with plenty of learner practice time.
