3 Quick Review Techniques

Sometimes you just want a quick, easy recap technique that will work:
- After a break in the virtual training room (on-line) eg after a 15 minutes break between episodes.
- After a break in the physical training room.
- To start day 2 etc either in the virtual or physical training room.
Of course, with a little adaptation, they can work well as a close.
Here are 3 ideas for you to try
When learners return after their break:
A-Z
- Say to learners, "I want you to go through the alphabet A-Z in your head. When I say stop, I'd like you to remember the letter you stopped on. Go."
- Allow 5-6 seconds.
- Say, "Stop".
- "With the letter that you stopped on, please think about one key idea from the training so far that starts with that letter - you can be creative if it's a tricky letter".
- Allow 30 seconds for people to think of their key point.
- Ask learners to share their key idea:
-Virtual - using the whiteboard or chat or for a small group, the microphone.
-Physical - on a flip-chart, in a small group by saying it out lout, with a large group share in their own team.
What you said
- Say, "I don't know if you know, but I'm a bit of a psychic and I know that you were chatting with your partner, your colleague, your friend [use as appropriate to the training location] and I know that they asked you how the training was going and what you learned. What I'd like you to do is share what you said."
-Virtual - using the whiteboard or chat or for a small group, the microphone.
-Physical - on a flipchart, in a small group by saying it out lout, with a large group share in their own team.
3-11
- Say, "I'd like someone to shout out any number between 3 and 11." [Usually, someone will shout out 7 but any number will work].
- "Now I'd like that number of ideas from the training so far." [If it's a high number, there will be groans but just say, "well, you know who to blame" and smile].
-Virtual - add to whiteboard.
-Physical - in small teams on a flipchart.
Call To Action
Next time that you are faciliating live virtual training, apply one of the above ideas that you've forgotten to use recently, or try one that you haven't used before. It's the little things we do that make all the difference.
