Engage Learners Immediately After Lunch
We all know about the post-lunch slump, so engage your learners immediately after lunch to help avoid this. After all, prevention is better than cure.
Try this simple learner centred review that’s guaranteed to bring your learners mentally back into their training and get them in a state ready to learn. Best of all, it relates directly to content.
What Am I?
- Form small teams of 4-5 learners.
- Ask them to discuss and then select a topic, theme, key idea or message from the mornings training but to keep it a secret from other teams.
- Ask them to create a series of statements about their selection that helps describe it without giving away its name.
- Say that points will be awarded to teams that are able to guess ‘what it is’ that the team are describing. The team with the most points will be deemed the winning team.
- Ask the first team to read each statement, one by one with a gap between to give other teams time to guess what it might be eg Let’s say that from a trainer development workshop my statements are:- I start towards the beginning of the design process.
(Pause)– I have quite a long life.
(Pause)– Some people would say that I can be very difficult.
(Pause)– I will help you prove your worth as a trainer.
Did you manage to guess what I was from my statements? (Answer – Evaluation)
- Total up the points and ‘crown’ the winning team.
Alternatively
- Ask teams to mime their selection – ensuring that all team members are involved within the actual mime.
- Ask teams to create a colourful poster that represents their selection that other teams have to guess ‘what it is’.
Call To Action
When learners return from lunch, rather than you simply summarising the content from the morning, use a learner centred review technique such as the one above. This ensures your learners reflect and recall previous content as well as adding engagment to bring them mentally back into the room.
